Quick steps

How to convert decimal hours to hours and minutes

  1. Keep the whole number as hours: 7.75 → 7 hours.
  2. Multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.
  3. If the minutes have a decimal part, multiply that part by 60 to get seconds.

So 7.75 hours = 7:45:00. Decimal hours use fractions of an hour: 7.75 does not mean 7 hours 75 minutes.

0.25 → 0:15:00

A quarter of an hour is 15 minutes.

7.75 → 7:45:00

The fractional 0.75 hour adds 45 minutes to 7 hours.

40.5 → 40:30:00

Durations may exceed one day; 40 hours stays 40 hours.

Spreadsheet formulas

Convert decimal hours in Excel or Google Sheets

If A2 contains a numeric decimal-hour value such as 7.75, divide it by 24:

=A2/24

Format the result as a duration using [h]:mm:ss to display 7:45:00. In Google Sheets, you can also choose Format → Number → Duration. Use elapsed hours in square brackets so 40.5 displays as 40:30:00 rather than wrapping after 24 hours.

Use [h]:mm if you only want hours and minutes; that display hides seconds. Make sure A2 is a number, not text, and use your spreadsheet locale's decimal separator.

Second-level output

When fractional seconds are rounded

total seconds = decimal hours × 3,600

The calculator parses decimal hours as an integer plus a decimal scale to avoid binary floating-point errors before rounding. For 1.001 hours, the exact duration includes 3.6 seconds, so the result is 1:00:04.

Not every decimal-hour value maps to a whole second. The output uses half-up rounding to the nearest second and tells you whenever that happened. It never rounds the source to a 5-, 10-, or 15-minute interval.

The result is a duration, not a clock reading. The converter does not infer a date, AM or PM, a shift, a break, or which hours should be paid or billed.
